To be sure, he had said it before, on the campaign trail, during the Summer and Fall of 2016. I kept my own counsel, and stayed silent, as it wasn’t worth wasting the electrons refuting the monumental ignorance embedded in his suggestion. But now, as President, he is saying it again. See below — so I guess I’ll need to respond.
[I would have assumed that by now one of his lawyers would have taken him aside, and walked him through how completely impossible — as a matter of political practicalities, to say nothing of irresponsible — his idea is.]
Licking his wounds (on his health care non-start, from last Friday — a self inflicted wound if ever there one was) — this morning, by tweet, he turns to cannibalize the Freedom Caucus, and urges the proper GOP to “eat” their own. Charming. That was five hours ago. Full-on self-destruct mode, in under 90 days in office. [But I digress, from the main narrative here.]
Four hours ago, and clearly still raging impotently, he once again suggested he’d “rewrite” libel laws. Also by insipid tweet:
“…The failing @nytimes has disgraced the media world. Gotten me wrong for two solid years. Change libel laws?…”
Uh-huh. So, Mr. President… funny thing — it turns out that you’d need a new constitutional amendment to do that. “Changing” the US libel laws almost always immediately runs afoul of… 
yep — the First Amendment. [Especially in the way he would like — to penalize political speech and writing, even if false — so long as there is a good faith basis to believe it is true]. Though none of the complained-about reporting has been untrue, in any material way — just to be clear.
So… I guess he thinks he can push through this change at three-quarters of the state houses, and both US Congressional chambers with the requisite super majority there as well, all in order to assuage his delicate and bruised feelings.
Hmmm. I think he’s getting decidedly tired… of “winning“, don’t you?
