Paul M.’s Is Notable On Sweden — For What He Fails To Say About The “Mistake”…

Tonight, Paul reports as though it is news to him that Sweden’s no lockdown approach… is failing.

And that Sweden is candidly admitting it was wrong to go that route, with both new cases, and deaths per thousands of population, skyrocketing. Sweden is essentially going into lockdown mode, at least through New Year’s weekend, at this point.

I appreciate the honesty of the Swedish government. Admit your acceleratingly lethal error, and now address it… aggressively.

What I don’t appreciate… is Paul’s inability to admit that he was just as wrong, in advocating that the US should be following the Swedish example — as he did repeatedly all Summer-long, and into the early Fall of 2020.

This sort of tap dancing… costs PowerLine whatever tiny teacup of credibility… it once possessed.

Just admit that you guys were in a huge rush to kill people, if there might be a buck or two of preserved commerce in it, here in the USA.

It now clearly turns out — based on the Swedes’ own openly-admitted failures — that it likely wouldn’t have even saved more than a buck or two — at the cost of (in the case of the US) hundreds of thousands of additional — excess — deaths.

Paul and John H. and Steve H. should admit that they were deadly wrong — about all of it.

But they won’t.

On A Frigid Afternoon, Exactly Seventy-Eight Years Ago, In Hyde Park — The “Chicago Pile” And Enrico Fermi Ushered In… The Atomic Age.

Yes, this moment led inexorably to later, much, much darker discoveries — that built upon the originally sublime work.

But at its core, this was initially a peaceful endeavor — to create long-lasting sources of relatively cheap energy. To be sure, I am no starry-eyed innocent, but the moment should not be vilified, either — it was a significant advance in human understanding of physical laws. And indeed, it also led to many peaceful, life advancing devices, and technologies. [And, true to our other properties’ masthead(s) — the geniuses were, almost to a person… new immigrants to our nation, fleeing Nazi persecution, at that moment.]

So I for one will commemorate the moment — and laud the pure pursuit of science, on the part of the team of Edwin Goldwasser and Enrico Fermi… and all those now long dead — under the massive stone-encased bleachers of old Amos Alonzo Stagg Field, at the makeshift lab, on a abandoned squash court, under the aegis of the University of Chicago’s metallurgical labs department. It was 1942, this afternoon… that humans (for better, or worse) entered the Atomic Age. A bit, then from an older New Yorker piece:

…December 2, 1942 was the coldest day in nearly 50 years in Chicago. That frigid afternoon, a crew of men and women — many of them hailing from countries an ocean away, where the Second World War raged –gathered under the viewing stands of the University of Chicago’s Stagg Field to light a secret fire. They were members of the Metallurgical Laboratory, an organization that had existed only since that January, and were attending to their creation, a dusty collection of graphite, uranium, and scientific equipment that they called the Pile….

The Chicago Pile deserved its low-tech name. It was a stack of forty thousand graphite blocks, held together in a wooden frame, twenty-five feet wide and twenty feet tall. Inside about half of the blocks were holes containing small amounts of uranium oxide; inside a few others were nuggets of refined uranium metal, the production of which was still a novel process. The Pile had few safety features. The scientists’ only protection against radiation came from a set of cadmium control rods, designed to be inserted and removed by hand, along with untested theories and calculations. As one governmental report later put it, “there were no guidelines to follow and no previous knowledge to incorporate.”

Neither university nor city officials were told that an experiment that even its creators judged as risky was taking place in the heart of the second-largest city in the United States….

Well, that was some rather heady. . . Elon Musk style arrogance, no? But it was under perhaps 300,000 tons of concrete and stone, to be fair. Even so, no one really knew what would happen as they gingerly withdrew one control rod after another… Yikes.

Onward. . . smiling… a sunny but chilly bike ride by the lake awaits… and it is perhaps best that we each and every one, light our own secret fires, as we close down the catastrophe that was 2020….

Power Alley: Merck… Can Do Math… Grin — A Denouement, On The Moderna Stake…

To be clear, I was not aware of Merck’s move when I sold 75 per cent of my shares, last Friday in the holiday shortened session.

But while I still think Moderna a great company, and it is obvious that Merck still does (2018 backgrounder, on the IPO), too — after having directly invested over $500 million in the novel vaccine and mRNA therapeutics developer — it is overheated at what was at one point briefly over $170/share, yesterday. It will sell hundreds of millions of courses of the coming vaccine, but it will face astonishing pressure to price it at under $10 per dose. And perhaps well under, outside the US, Japan and Western Europe.

In any event — should it dip below $100 again, I’d be a buyer at that point. Now I’m just a fan, mostly watching from the sidelines, Here’s the bit from CNBC:

…U.S. drugmaker Merck said on Wednesday it has sold its equity investment in Moderna, after benefiting from a surge in the stock price of the vaccine developer this year.

Merck did not disclose the details of the sale proceeds, but said it expects to record a small gain from the sale in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Moderna’s shares have risen more than seven-fold this year, valuing the company at $55.80 billion as of Tuesday’s closing price….

This is a return to the power-alley, so we will bank the gains, and likely average into Apple, long — or buy a passel of out of the money puts, on a stupid company called Riot Blockchain.

Grinning, as there is always a brighter day ahead… Merck’s gain was likely three to four billion dollars — but still largely immaterial to massive mother Merck, with sales approaching $50 billion a year. Now you know.

Very Early This Morning, Romanian Time — That “Second” Monolith (Attributed To McCracken)… Vanished. Just Days After First Sighting. Sorta’ Like… Moab Version?

It may well turn out that the Romanian monolith was in fact a genuine McCracken. It vanished — just as the Moab one did — during the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday, Romanian time.

My current betting now expects to see at least twenty of these, in total, before the fictional 2001 launch date of United States Spacecraft Discovery One, the ship used in 2001 — here 20 years on, in 2021. Whatever happens, it will make a nice story of some sort — that may feed yet another sequel to the Kubrick/Clarke efforts of now over a half-century ago.

Here’s just a bit of it, from the Insider:

…The nine-foot-tall structure “disappeared overnight as quietly as it was erected last week,” journalist Robert Iosub, from the Ziar Piatra Neamt newspaper, told Reuters after seeing the structure. “Now all that remains is just a small hole covered by rocky soil.”

No one knew where it came from, or who put it near the town of Piatra Neamt four days ago — but the structure appeared on the same day a twin monolith vanished from the Utah desert. . . .

Fascinating. We will keep the readership… posted.

Of course it is now being credibly reported that the Moab monolith was stolen by four young male vandals, who broke it apart before carting it off, last Saturday night. [Might that also be an. . . elaborate cover story, as well? Who knows?]

Grinning…. ever, grinning.

A Main Suspension Cable Snapped This Morning, At Arecibo — Sending The 900 Ton Antenna Rig Crashing Into The Dish…

We’ve mentioned it several times before here. And, despite an online “Save Arecibo” petition started over the long holiday weekend, one that had gathered over 60,000 supporters… it seems the dish in Puerto Rico is truly at a permanently-silenced… end-point.

At around 8 AM local time, at the site, a primary suspension cable holding the antenna assembly (see vintage inset image, at left) aloft… snapped. The entire rig — over 900 tons of mass — then immediately crashed through the plane of the dish, shattering the center. [There were already large sections of the dish, near the edges, that had collapsed into the crater floor (see below right inset image), due to earlier cable failures.]

I am afraid all eyes are now on China — and its mega-dish. She served humanity well — but she is now permanently… offline. Silent. Here’s a bit, from the AP’s on site reporting, late this morning:
…A huge, already damaged radio telescope in Puerto Rico that has played a key role in astronomical discoveries for more than half a century completely collapsed on Tuesday.

The telescope’s 900-ton receiver platform and the Gregorian dome — a structure as tall as a four-story building that houses secondary reflectors — fell onto the northern portion of the vast reflector dish more than 400 feet below.

The U.S. National Science Foundation had earlier announced that the Arecibo Observatory would be closed. An auxiliary cable snapped in August, causing a 100-foot gash on the 1,000-foot-wide (305-meter-wide) dish and damaged the receiver platform that hung above it. Then a main cable broke in early November.

The collapse at 7:56 a.m. on Tuesday wasn’t a surprise because many of the wires in the thick cables holding the structure snapped over the weekend, Ángel Vázquez, the telescope’s director of operations, told The Associated Press….

Installing a new telescope would cost up to $350 million, money the NSF doesn’t have, he said, adding it would have to come from U.S. Congress….

That is highly unlikely. I supposed we ought to just be thankful for the discoveries there made. And get the Webb Space Telescope up into a LaGrange point orbit as soon as is possible — probably early 2022, now. Onward — smiling into the sunshine here, just the same. Be excellent to one another.

More… McCracken (Like “More Cowbell!”): If We Were To Assume The Romanian One Is A Knock-Off… And Use Google Earth…

If you haven’t figured it out already, I am entirely… smitten with the idea that this famed American sculptor, gone now for almost a decade, left behind some form of mysterious tribute to the Kubrick/Clarke tour-de-force. That it might be unfolding on the cusp of the twentieth backer-versary of the movie’s setting… and the tenth, of his passing… is all the more soul-stirring, for me at least.

So, being the obsessive sort(!) that I am, I arose early this morning, and starting using Google Earth, to draw bright yellow straight lines across the globe, from the Utah lat./long. — to the Mount Ceahlau, Romania lat./long., and then see what landmarks the yellow line might plausibly pass over. Not many, in truth. Not even that many interesting topographical features, either. [But I may try flying the globe, not from Moab, but from the city of Pietra Neamt, Romania to Moab, essentially going “the other way ’round the globe” passing through Asia to the Pacific, rather than through Europe and over the Atlantic, later today — time permitting.]

In fact, I may prepare a series of these — assuming other sites, like near Stonehenge, or the pyramids (in Egypt or Mexico), or Machu Pichu might ultimately be the chosen site(s) of another “deposit/appearance”. And then draw lines from them to Moab — seeing what (else) is right on those global “meridian” line(s). But since the first Romanian trek was a dry well, I drew a line from Uhuru, the most sacred spot of the indigenous peoples in Australia — back to the canyon south of Moab, and… viola!, the yellow line passes directly over the easterly out islands of Papua New Guinea.

Given that it is likely McCracken (as a NYC artist of substantial note) would be aware that in the 1950s, some of the Rockefeller scions simply crated up, and made off with sacred burial totems (which, the island people believed were in fact the embodiment/receptacles of the spirits of their ancestors) off those islands, without honoring the ancestors — and then installed them in a downtown Manhattan museum, where they sit to this day (without the required context and reverence)… I wondered: could there be another… monolith — along the way, to Uhuru, left there — as atonement, for the prior Rockefeller sins?

And some may recall that the tale of the likely cannibalization of the younger Rockefeller, as told in the book “Savage Harvest” captivated me six years ago — and the tabloids’ told tale of the young man’s disappearance may also have been known to Mr. McCracken. So, I will use the satellite imagery to scour those islands for evidence of monolith… shadows. Karma is a wheel, it seems….

It will indeed by ironic, if it all turns out anything like this.

In any event, it makes for good story-telling, by our home hearths and fireplaces. And that may be just what we need, to get through this coming winter, before the vaccine is widely available. Onward (will add to this later — but day duties call).

[O/T] And Then, There Were… TWO! A Second, New Monolith Appears — Facing A Holy Geographical / Archaeological Site — In Northeastern Romania…

Well now, this is getting… quite interesting. Is this a riddle, playing out — across continents — from the bucket-list wish, of a famous American 20th Century sculptor?

The Romanian version looks to be not as polished / finely-finished as the first — so it is possible that it is a copycat, and not (what most people now surmise was) a McCracken, south of Moab, Utah. [The Romanian version is also a little bit taller, at 13 feet — with the seams more easily visible, as well — and circular buffing patters left in the metal throughout.]

From this evening’s [London]Daily Mail, then:

…In Romania, the triangular structure has a height of about 13 feet and one side faces Mount Ceahlau, known locally as the Holy Mountain. The shiny triangular pillar was found on Batca Doamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamt in northern Romania last Thursday.

It was spotted a few metres away from the well-known archaeological landmark the Petrodava Dacian Fortress, an fort built by the ancient Dacian people between 82 BC and AD 106.

It is one of the most famous mountains in Romania, and is listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the country.

Romanian officials still do not know who is responsible for erecting the mysterious monolith….

Was this a codicil in McCracken’s will, all leading up to the 20th after-versary of “2001: A Space Odyssey”?

Will 20 of them appear and disappear, in turn — over the next few months? We shall see — soon enough. But for now, I cannot stop… grinning. I love this stuff. If it is a McCracken, though it has a new finish, from his prior body of work. Fascinating….

Irony: After All Her Foot Dragging, Sarah Fabian Complains That The Lawyers Representing Incarcerated Children Are “Trying To Rush Things”…

Well, she’s nothing, if not… predictable. This afternoon in LA, she filed what she called an “Objection” — saying that the lawyers for the kids haven’t done enough to meet and confer before asking more from the ICE and DHS and HHS forces she represents.

This is… deep irony, heaped on top of her prior pathos (about “safe and sanitary” not including a toothbrush, or soap, or bedding — of any kind). She complains about largely meaningless procedural niceties, the upshot of which ultimately only mean she has to work more than an eight hour day, while children are locked away from their parents — without any legally cognizable rationale. I am through with her — 51 days. 51… days.

That will — we hope — be her expiry / end date.

Now you know — and… on a more cheerful note — we will press onward, now in occasional bits of free time, searching for additional McCracken-2001 inspired posthumous “leave-behinds” (via Google Earth — now that we know what sorts of pointy shadows to look for, on the satellite imagery — in the blazingly hot, sun drenched red rock formations of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona)… smiling widely… with this fun “Where’s Waldo” project ahead….

[O/T] I Have My Own Suspicions — About The Identity Of The Fine Artist/Sculptor… But It Is Sublime… Theatre

Ahem. Longer-term readers of my other properties know how enamored I am of free public art installations, from the likes of Cristo (in the Rockies of my youth, and more recently — Central Park in NYC), to Banksy… and beyond.

This is doubly delightful, since it is both officially anonymous, and clearly directly channels… excellent space based sci-fi.

For anyone who hasn’t yet seen the story… it “arrived” some weeks or perhaps even years… prior, in the copper-colored rocky-cliffed desert south of Moab, but was just “discovered” last week — only to now have “vanished into thin air“(!?) — over this long weekend.

If that doesn’t clearly ring in — as a worthy nod to Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” [and “2010“, the less celebrated sequel]… I don’t know what would. [To be fair, this one is/was a three sided monolith, not the black orthotope / right rectangular prism shape, from those Clarke novellas — but the allusion is… unmistakable.] Here’s a bit, from the NYT:

…It was a mystery how the monolith had been installed in the first place. Lt. Nick Street, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said this week that the monolith had been embedded into the rock.

“Somebody took the time to use some type of concrete-cutting tool or something to really dig down, almost in the exact shape of the object, and embed it really well,” he said. “It’s odd. There are roads close by, but to haul the materials to cut into the rock, and haul the metal, which is taller than 12 feet in sections — to do all that in that remote spot is definitely interesting.”

Officials said that the structure was most likely a work of art and that its installation on public land was illegal. It was unclear who had put it there — and when — but the art world quickly speculated that it was the work of John McCracken, a sculptor fond of science fiction. He died in 2011.

His son, Patrick McCracken, told The New York Times this week that his father had told him in 2002 that “he would like to leave his artwork in remote places to be discovered later….”

While officials declined to disclose the monolith’s location, some people had tracked it down. David Surber, who visited the structure this week and posted videos of it on Instagram, said it was located near Lockhart Basin Road, which is south of Moab.

Mr. Surber, who trekked to the monolith, posted about its disappearance on his Instagram story on Saturday night. “Apparently the monolith is gone,” he said. “Nature returned back to her natural state I suppose. . . .”

Almost as clever a stunt as the Banksy self-shredding gold framed item, at Christie’s auction house of 2018, or any of his month long, city by city “guerilla” installation projects, over the last decade. Lovely.

Perhaps all it is… is a form, for some form-less… intelligence, only temporarily visiting.

Grinning widely now, and looking to the night skies, south by southwest-ward….

In Which Hinderaker Claims(!?) The GOP Is Now The Party Of The Middle- And Working-Classes…

We are pretty nearly at the end of any need to respond in considered fashion, to much of anything Hinderaker posts henceforth — it is all now self-refuting. [I’ll revise the masthead in a minute to suggest no one should ever trust John’s views on any scientific matter.]

So it is… that John’s claims have always lacked discernible evidence, but when his boy Trump promulgated policies that only benefited the ultra-wealthy, and the at least third generation white, US born peoples, it became — and is… now simply silly — to call the GOP the party of the “working class“. But that is what Hinderaker just did.

He suggested that the future of the GOP lies in marrying Trumpism (anti-immigrant policies, tariffs and tax cuts for billionaires) to more frugal spending, at the federal governmental level. Okay.

I for one actually hope the GOP is as stupid as John suggests — to embrace such a mindless, cruel and backward-looking set of priorities.

It will mean the party never wins another presidential election. Fine by me.

Perfect, in fact.

It does acknowledge a second reality — that Trump’s views are also the views of the 1920s Klan — and they were explicitly fostered by all the loyal GOP members these last four years. Especially Hinderaker. As if, unaware of his irony — and thus to prove this point, John attaches a Coolidge Foundation video, as the way “forward“.

It is absolutely indisputable fact that Coolidge occupied 1600 Penn during most of the decade that saw the Klan reach perhaps 5 million members — its all time high. The Klan began to fade after the Crash of 1929, and the onset of the Great Depression — but Coolidge never directly rebuked those home-grown white terrorists.

Just as Trump never directly rebuked the Proud Boys, or the Boo-A-Loo Bois.

So yes, John’s accurately captures… what he wants the future of the GOP to be — and that is… a throw-back to / re-incarnation of the Klan of the 1920s. Makes perfect sense, John.

Out.
