Between 2006 and 2021, around 60 percent of all imports of unmanufactured copper to the United States came from Chile. John claims it is… primarily Russia.
Canada and Mexico were other important copper trading allies for the United States.
Not Russia, John. The weight and distance alone — make Russian copper uneconomic. And (to the extent Hinderaker thinks local mining could be restarted), the very heavy overburden in Minnesota’s remaining copper pits… also makes Minnesota non-economic. It is not environmentalism — it is pure Earth moving impossibility that dooms Minnesotan mining.
You see, I know more than just a bit about this — having mined the ore, in Chile, in the late 1970s, in part (along with Moly- mining) to pay for undergrad.
But John simply (again) lies through his teeth.
We are not a major copper purchaser from Russian sources, and Russia is not even really a major factor, globally, any longer.
So sit down, John — your supposed wedge issue is… a lie.
