Once again, I am marking it here, for the record — as in the coming days and weeks, we are all but certain to read at least a redacted version of the full Mueller report.
But John tonight (feverishly) relies on the two sentences in a four page letter — one generated after just 48 hours of review, from two lawyers (one of whom Trump picked precisely because of his expansive views of executive authority) who — despite Mueller’s team taking two years, interviewing 500 witnesses (but NOT Donald Trump), reviewing thousands of documents — tens of thousands of emails, and listening to many hours of recorded phone calls… chose to NOT exonerate Mr. Trump on obstruction. This, almost to the letter, is how Leon Jaworski handled his report — about Watergate. Eventually, Nixon left pretty quietly. [UPDATED: 03.29.19 — I expect much the same here — now that we will read large chunks of the report by April 15, 2019.]
Mr. Mueller plainly handed the ultimate decision of whether Mr. Trump criminally obstructed justice — to the Congress (in the few matters he was tasked with investigating). But John and Matt Drudge both declare a victory.
That view is wildly premature (though not surprisingly, Trump’s uttered the same nonsense, tonight by tweet).
I think Mr. Hinderaker will regret this post — when any one of the six OTHER criminal inquiries (SD NY; D for DC; ED VA — and New York state level) are complete — and when the Congress (as the founders contemplated) privately reviews the full Mueller report, without redactions — and comes to its own decisions — about whether to impeach.
But John’s post history is literally littered waist deep in what turned out to be — in many cases, within only a few days’ time — completely wrong early (but rabidly partisan) takes.
No shock there.
Onward.
