On A Sunday Morning, Mr. Hinderaker Concedes: “It was all political theater…”

I suppose we should regard this as progress, after a fashion.

Mr. Hinderaker today essentially concedes that Mr. Trump’s executive order on immigration is… ultimately impotent. DOA, in fact.

The path he takes to arrive at this conclusion is not in any way surprising, and error riddled, but it is (for me) only the conclusion that matters:

Mr. Trump needs Congress to completely overhaul immigration laws in the US if we are to really be any safer. That is Mr. Hinderaker’s conclusion.

Of course, as John well knows, it is in fact the grown descendants of very few immigrants who pose the threat — such as he perceives it, anyway. So he all but admits there is no way to “vet” the infant children already here. Especially so, where only perhaps one one-thousandth of one per cent of them will ever turn out to be anything other than solid citizens. Same with infants whose families have been here since our earliest days.

He knows it, too. He just leaves that part unsaid.

In short, he concedes that immigration policy cannot make us safer.

And in the process, he rather meekly chides Mr. Trump for this clearly un-American attempt — though he won’t even call it that.

But he does know it is DOA — the federal courts will now dutifully eviscerate it as unlawful over-reach.

This is how the founders set our democracy in motion, over 220 years ago — with explicit checks embedded, against tyrants — yep, built right in, in fact. They had suffered atrocities under the rule of vain and small men like him. So they designed the whole of the then radical form of self-government around… blunting the would-be moves of men… like him.
