Tonight, late — he ranted because Marquette has removed a part of its panel which depicted Father Marquette falsely telling an indigenous guide where to take him, to find a safe settlement. The opposite is the truth:

The facts (at least as set out in Marquette’s diary, and) recounted in the painting (from which the seal panel was derived), made long after Marquette’s death, by Wilhelm Alfred Lamprecht, depicts Marquette receiving hospitality, guidance and protection from the Miami tribe. They told him how to safely reach the Mississippi again. They, and the Pottawatomi, fed him wild rices — and stocked his canoe with the same, for the multi-day trip.

So, Marquette University revised the seal — and included wild rice. [This too is deemed an offense to Hinderaker (somehow?), since he is obviously ignorant of the fact that both Jesuit missionaries and the indigenous peoples ate wild rice, in the upper midwest.]

To Hinderaker this removal of the stylized scene is some high offense, of some sort, against his whiteness — I gather. He’s not even Catholic, though. Sheesh.
