Bill’s latest, while attempting to explain why Tangerine is crushing DeSantis in the early polls, even those run by people who would prefer DeSantis on the ticket… admits what many sensible middle of the road, and left leaning folks already see: the GOP is done. Stick a fork in it for 2024 national races, to a near certainty.

With its own core divided so egregiously, the GOP cannot field a winner in the general. There is, in short, no one to eclipse Trump — and the world knows Trump will lose in the general, no matter whom the Democrats nominate. In context, and in specifics, here’s how Bill sees this:

…Trump is piling up felony charges, some merely products of political grandstanding (the Alvin Bragg show, in particular), but some more serious than that (Jack Smith’s federal indictment for misappropriating classified documents and obstruction of justice). More legal trouble is likely on the way, both from the Atlanta prosecutor and, more worrisome for Trump, further charges from Smith relating to Trump’s egging on the January 6 riot. And Trump continues acidly to trash good men and strong conservatives he appointed, in particular Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr….

Bill pens this not because he is a man of principles — but because he is a pragmatist.

If the GOP is to survive into 2024, it will have to eliminate Trump — and avoid his coming third party run.

The GOP is already ankle-deep — in a muddy field. And, I don’t think the GOP has the shoes for it. They have no ideas — as to how this could ever work out to eliminate Trump, unless of course they feed him entirely-too-much (but… enough) KFC and McDs between now and then… I guess.
