Space Force Command (Formerly Air Force Space Command) Has Been In Colorado Springs For Decades…

And yet (the GOP moron) Sen. Tommy Tuberville, in Alabama — calls KEEPING it in its current location… “blatant patronage politics“.

Huh. Precious.

Look, I realize — as a former D1 NCAA football player and later, college football coach, he may have suffered a few too many concussions (common in his era) for his judgment to be considered even marginally passable… but leaving something in place (ie., NOT moving it to Tuberville’s state, as Tangerine had hurriedly tried as he left office) is not “patronage”.

Tuberville obviously doesn’t even understand the concept. [It is very near where the Air Force Academy is — and has been since the 1940s. Not a Biden/Obama thing, at all, bub.]

But nonetheless, he is holding up hundreds of military promotions and so on — because he wants to prevent the military women from getting family planning health services.

Yep — that’s why he wants it moved to Alabama, with its very restrictive anti-abortion laws.

Just how stupid is the jamoke?

Don’t bother. We already know: box of rocks… stupid; and feckless, too.

Out.

Tangent: Some MSM Guesses, On Pfizer’s Q2 2023 Results — May Resume This Longitudinal Series Of Comparisons. We Shall See…

Pfizer is considerably larger than Merck, yet over the last 18 months at least, it hasn’t posted as impressive results as Rahway. This is certainly in part due to a larger base, as the denominator in growth. . . but on balance both Lilly and Merck have outperformed it on the NYSE.

As far as main stream media guesses — on how its Q2 ’23 will turn out — do go read all of this — but here’s a bit:

…In the Primary Care segment, Pfizer expects significantly lower sales from its COVID products in the second quarter versus the first quarter.

Among COVID products, Pfizer records direct sales and alliance revenues from its partner, BioNTech for the COVID-19 vaccine, Comirnaty, and product revenues from its oral antiviral pill for COVID, Paxlovid.

Our estimate for direct sales and alliance revenues from BioNTech for Comirnaty is $1.23 billion, while that for Paxlovid is $610 million.

Alliance revenues from Bristol-Myers for Eliquis are likely to have provided top-line support. Continued oral anti-coagulant adoption and market share gains in non-valvular atrial fibrillation might have benefited alliance revenues from Bristol-Myers’ Eliquis sales in the United States and some European markets in the second quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for alliance revenues from Eliquis is $1.86 billion while our model estimate is $2.0 billion….

Newly acquired products, including Nurtec ODT/Vydura for migraine and Oxbryta for sickle cell disease are expected to have contributed to the top line in the quarter. Nurtec ODT/Vydura was added to Pfizer’s portfolio with the acquisition of Biohaven in 2022. Oxbryta was added with the October 2022 acquisition of Global Blood Therapeutics….

Onward, to a glorious mid-summer morning here… I think the taco trucks will call to me for a late lunch — yep — I think… grin.

In Which Bill Otis Takes To His “Ringside” Fainting Couch, Tonight…

Bill would tell us that the nation is in trouble, because… “censorship”. Or something.

And because of it, he feels he must vote for a man in 2024 who he himself intones he wouldn’t trust to be a dog catcher. Because… “censorship”. Or something.

He thinks the nation is doomed — or something — because… private actor / social media companies won’t let him take a crap on the white shag carpet, in their own well-appointed private living rooms, and repeatedly.

Man… who ARE these head cases?

Really — this is what a trained former prosecutor thinks of as… rational discourse?

Then sure — let him call this private party restricting access to megaphones… his errant version of some form of “censorship”… or something… but do NOT let him return to Twitter or FB or Insta- or YouTube.

He doesn’t even understand the plain text of the First Amendment. Why should we worry abut his precious fee- fee-s?!

Nah…. Just leave him to his fainting couch, folks. He’s better off there. Trust me.

And Now, Hinderaker Trafficks In Tabloid Fodder….

When John Hinderaker feels he’s entitled to use the recent tragic drowning of a former Presidential chef, as an excuse to invoke Mary Jo Kopechne (also accidentally drown, but over a half century ago!), solely because it happened in the same 100 square mile area… (an over three hour drive, overland, but shorter distance by waterway, as the crow flies) we may confidently assert… Hinderaker’s lost it.

John is not just hideously insulting a good man — after his tragic death has ended his ability to respond.

He is not just defaming the 44th President. He is not just libeling two daughters of the former President… he attempts, tonight, to make some sort of loony scandal… out of… nothing other than a pure tragedy.

This sort of depravity… is telling, of mental illness.

Shut up, Hinderaker.

In Which Bitsy… Loses The Plot… Again.

As of Sunday afternoon, Betsy Stauffer has yet to comment on the Tangerine’s superseding indictment counts; and has failed to mention the looming third set of felony charges.

Instead, she thinks the biggest story of the coming week is going to be some convicted felon (awaiting sentencing) being served softball questions by House GOP MAGAts.

As we asked in an immediately prior post… why do these MAGAts give national play to lying felons?

Because they are out of… better options.

Like Bitsy, they long ago painted themselves into this corner.

And I’m here for all of it!

Grin.

Scott Sees “Dead People… All The Time” A La “Sixth Sense”…

So… the frothy hard right (i.e., Scott) GOP thinks a felony convict, who has now lost all his appeals… being scheduled for a surrender date by an AUSA in SDNY… is “witness intimidation”?!?

Precious.

I might ask the US House (frothy right) GOP: “Why are you inclined to accept anything this convicted and sentenced felon has to say… as worthy of belief, let alone CSPAN hearings?!”

Damn you hard right GOP whyte geezers are… gullible — or feckless… or, both!

Merck + NewLink: The Ebola Vaccine Will Now Be Approved In US For Children Age 1 And Up [Was 18 And Up].

The WHO had already recommended it for children (in emergencies), last year. And — as we all know — the bulk of the burden of this virus would be in sub-Saharan Africa. Of course, though, many local governments (including many in Africa) wait, and follow US FDA’s lead.

Now that key approval has come — so whenever the next flare up occurs (and we may be certain a flare up will come, in time, again), most of sub-Saharan Africa will already have approvals to administer the Zaire version vaccine to toddlers and children, in ring fashion (contacts of contacts). That’s the import of this development. Here’s that recent news, from the pharmaletter.com:

…Last Thursday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Ervebo, a vaccine for the prevention of Ebola virus disease caused by Zaire ebolavirus in individuals 12 months through 17 years of age.

Developed by US pharma giant Merck & Co, Ervebo has been approved in Europe and the USA for use in individuals 18 years of age and older since late 2019.

Cases of Ebola are very rare in the USA, and those that have occurred have been the result of infections acquired by individuals in other countries who then traveled to the USA, or health care workers who became ill after treating patients with Ebola, the FDA noted….

Now you know… smiling. All good news. Be excellent to one another… as ever.

Hinderaker Seems Increasingly Stuck On “Worn Out / Replay” — Of Battles, Long Lost, In Prior Wars. Hilarious!

Lacking any GOP story that doesn’t require assessing Tangerine’s ongoing destruction of the former brand — and approaching guaranty of wipe-out losses in 2024… Hinderaker, particularly, and Powerline in general, has become (almost exclusively) what he used to say he hated:

…A culture warrior, howling impotently into the night sky, in rural Minnesota.

He bleats about things that are either exaggerated, or simply… trivial (involve only one professional crisis actor — but for the frothy right).

So it goes. This is what approaching senility (and irrelevance) looks like, folks.

A “Sneak Peek” At Merck’s Q2 2023 Likely Performance — With Earnings Due On Tuesday — Before Market Open…

Do go read this whole piece, if this strikes your interest. In the last six or so years, I’ve stopped putting out quarterly predictions for Merck and Pfizer, but I am toying with the idea of resuming that tradition. We shall see.

In any event, this particular author’s analysis may be slightly off, on a few lesser metrics, but in the main it reads as almost all spot-on. Again, if you are looking to trade Merck’s Q2 disclosures — be sure to read this in advance of Tuesday. Here’s a bit:

…In oncology drugs, Keytruda sales are likely to have been driven by continued strong momentum in metastatic indications and rapid uptake across recent earlier-stage launches. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Keytruda’s sales is $5.87 billion, while our estimate is $5.69 billion. However, Keytruda’s year-over-year growth rate in the United States is expected to have moderated in the second quarter as the impact of the strong initial uptake of earlier-stage indications softened. In outside U.S. markets, while volumes are expected to have remained strong, pricing is expected to have been a headwind….

With regard to the HPV vaccine, Gardasil, ex-U.S. sales are expected to have been driven by strong demand in international markets like China in the second quarter. In the United States, sales were flat in the first quarter. It remains to be seen if sales trends improved in the second quarter. Overall, though Gardasil revenue growth in 2023 is expected to be higher than 2022 levels, the rate of growth in the second quarter is expected to have been less than the first quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Gardasil is $1.99 billion.

Meanwhile, the top line is expected to have witnessed the impact of the loss of U.S. market exclusivity for drugs like Remicade, Noxafil and Zetia. Lower demand and pricing in the United States and generic competition in certain international markets may have hurt sales of the diabetes franchise (Januvia/Janumet). The drugs lost market exclusivity in China in July and the European Union in September last year….

Merck did deliver an upside surprise of almost 5 per cent, at the sales line in Q1 2023… no reason to believe that won’t appear again, this quarter. Onward — grinning, with a creamy root beer float now… with a recording of last week’s NY Met Opera on in the background… out.

We See Here… A World The Size Of Four Earths… Having Its Atmosphere Stripped By A Young Hot Red Dwarf Star…

If we could travel to within a few light hours… of this system… what a fireworks show we would witness.

The very young (less than 100 million years old) system features a close orbiting world, that is being shredded in the upper atmosphere, at least, by gouging electromagnetic swirls from the very nearby star. It might look lik a freight train on the tracks, during a foggy night — with a glowing beacon ahead as well as behind it, as it passed in front of the host star… as imaged by NASA artists at right. Here’s the full story:

…NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope [recently observed that] the planet looked like it wasn’t losing any material at all, while an orbit observed with Hubble a year and a half later showed clear signs of atmospheric loss.

This extreme variability between orbits shocked astronomers. “We’ve never seen atmospheric escape go from completely not detectable to very detectable over such a short period when a planet passes in front of its star,” said Keighley Rockcliffe of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. “We were really expecting something very predictable, repeatable. But it turned out to be weird. When I first saw this, I thought ‘That can’t be right.'”

Rockcliffe was equally puzzled to see, when it was detectable, the planet’s atmosphere puffing out in front of the planet, like a headlight on a fast-bound train. “This frankly strange observation is kind of a stress-test case for the modeling and the physics about planetary evolution. This observation is so cool because we’re getting to probe this interplay between the star and the planet that is really at the most extreme,” she said.

Located 32 light-years from Earth, the parent star AU Microscopii (AU Mic) hosts one of the youngest planetary systems ever observed. The star is less than 100 million years old (a tiny fraction of the age of our Sun, which is 4.6 billion years old). The innermost planet, AU Mic b, has an orbital period of 8.46 days and is just 6 million miles from the star (about 1/10th the planet Mercury’s distance from our Sun). The bloated, gaseous world is about four times Earth’s diameter….

[This local star’s solar] flares are powered by intense magnetic fields that get tangled by the roiling motions of the stellar atmosphere. When the tangling gets too intense, the fields break and reconnect, unleashing tremendous amounts of energy that are 100 to 1,000 times more energetic than our Sun unleashes in its outbursts. It’s a blistering fireworks show of torrential winds, flares, and X-rays blasting any planets orbiting close to the star. “This creates a really unconstrained and frankly, scary, stellar wind environment that’s impacting the planet’s atmosphere,” said Rockcliffe….

Now you know — be excellent to one another, as ever… smile.
